Report from the Tour of Missouri

Anne and I have been in St. Louis since Saturday for a weekend getaway and to watch the first stage of the Tour of Missouri. We're staying at the Four Seasons downtown, and it's been great. Anne commented that everything has been exactly like a hotel brochure, and I agree.

I did a group ride on Sunday associated with the Gateway Cup criterium series. The group ride was a 40-miler that covered parts of the
Tour of Missouri circuit and the Gateway Cup's Tour de Lafayette Square and Giro Della Montagna Friday and Saturday stages. I was glad I rode the cyclocross bike because the start of the ride was rainy and wet. I ended up meeting a guy from KC who rides for Bicycle Shack's race team. We talked and rode parts of the route relatively hard.

Monday's Gateway Cup finals and the Tour of Missouri stage were interesting to watch. Criteriums started early in the morning, and I ran to the route and around it a couple of times while watching the early morning crits. Later in the day, we saw the start of the Tour of Missouri stage and hung around for a couple of laps. We took a few good pictures before the camera's battery died and we got hot and tired. We came back to the hotel pool before the stage finished. It would have been fun to see the finish, but the crowds were really thick and we'd had enough. Besides, the pictures and coverage will be better on VeloNews and Versus anyway.

This morning, I went out for an early speed interval run along the Riverfront Trail. The trail follows the Mississippi River north from downtown. It's very industrial and I wouldn't want to run there at night, but it was interesting to see the old St. Louis riverfront.

All in all, a good trip, and I'm excited to watch more Tour of Missouri this week.
