JCBC Cider Mill Century... kinda

Did the Johnson County Bike Club's Cider Mill Century today. The ride calls itself a century, but it actually has options for 25, 50, 70, and 100 miles.

Jeff, a coworker, and I planned to do the 50 mile ride, but we felt pretty good around the 30 mile mark and started considering doing the full 100 miles. I noted that riding 100 miles probably seems like a better idea at 33 miles than it does at 66. We got separated around 40 miles, and, sure enough, riding 100 miles started to seem less like a good idea to me not long after that. I finished the 70 mile route with a pretty respectable average speed of 18.2 mph. Jeff managed to finish the full 100 miles for what I think is his first century. Congrats, Jeff! I'd like to do one someday.

I need to clean the bike, but I don't really want to look at it for a while.

Oh... and don't believe the incredibly inflated calorie count from Garmin for the ride. Garmin's calorie estimates for cycling are nearly double what they should be. Most estimates are around 35 to 40 calories per mile for cycling. That would make my ride more like 2300 to 2700 calories.

  1. Wow, what a ride! I'm ready to get off the bike after the 3 mile commute to the office. I can't imagine doing a 70 mile ride. Kudos to you!!
