Musings on Forerunners

Got a question about how the Forerunner 305 compares with the newer 405. Here are my thoughts.

I've had my 305 for a couple of years, and it was as good as they got when I bought it. If I were buying a Forerunner today, however, I'd probably buy a 405CX for a couple of reasons. Both the 405 and the 405CX can upload data to a computer over Bluetooth so, unlike my 305, no USB cable is necessary. I also really like the 405CX's more accurate heartrate-based calorie calculations. Especially on bike rides, my 305's calorie totals are not very accurate. For fast bike rides, the 305's calorie totals are approximiately double what they should be. More accurate effort-based calorie calculations would be very nice.

On the other hand, Forerunner 305s have become relatively inexpensive at Amazon or other places. If $160 for a 305 seems like a lot of money, buy the 305 anyway and you'll love it. If $369 seems reasonable for a 405CX, buy it instead and i think you'll love it even more.
